8 Foods You'll Never See a Dentist Eating

If the dentist won’t eat them, neither should you! There is a wide range of foods that we should avoid, if we want to keep our teeth in great shape, free from fillings and root canals. Many different foods can cause plaque and bacteria, creating a whole host of problems for your teeth. Try to avoid or limit the foods below:

White Bread

We all know that white bread is bad. But did you know that it can lead to tooth erosion? What happens is that the sugars from the bread quickly dissolve inside the mouth, creating a wave of acid that can erode the tooth enamel. So, remember to pick brown bread the next time you hit the supermarket.

Pasta sauce

Tooth enamel doesn’t fare well with dark colours over a period of time. Red pasta sauce can cause stains on the teeth, as the enamel can easily absorb the colouring. Also, the acid from the tomatoes can weaken your teeth. It would be a tough task to kick pasta sauce out of your diet completely, so consider only eating it occasionally. (We wouldn’t be mean enough to suggest kicking it out of your diet for good!)

Dried fruit

Although dried fruits are high in nutritional value, they contain high doses of sugar too. These fruits can get stuck in the crevices of your teeth, leaving behind lots of sugar trapped in your teeth. Your best bet is to stick with fresh fruit instead!

Chewy sweets

You’ll be hard pushed to find a dentist who keeps a stash of chewy sweets. They are extremely bad for the teeth, as they create acids that gradually destroy your tooth enamel. This can cause a build-up of plaque, as well as leaving holes in your teeth. So, make sure you curb your cravings for sweets.

Pickles

Pickles are another food that has is high in sugar. Combined with the fact that all pickled foods use vinegar, which has a high acid content, these foods are doing your teeth no favours. Consider limiting how often you tuck into a pickle and focus on calcium-rich foods.

Popcorn

It’s nearly impossible not to get popcorn when you go to the cinema. They’re everyone’s favourite cinema snack. Unfortunately, popcorn can cause bacterial growth when they get wedged in your teeth. Kernels at the bottom of the bag can also damage your teeth.

Curry

As much as you may enjoy a good curry, too much of it can lead to tooth discoloration over time. It’s the curry power that causes the problem. The deep pigment within the powder can cause yellow stains.

Canned fruit

Canned fruit has the lure of juicy sweetness and it can be enjoyed all year round. But canned fruit is usually swimming in high-sugar fructose syrup. This is because food manufacturers often put loads of sugar into canned fruit. If you want to steer clear of cavities, it’s best to stick with fresh fruit or the frozen kind instead.
