You’ve heard it before – you are what you eat. In no other area is this truer than your teeth. The things we decide to put in our mouths have a massive effect on our oral health, so making sure the right stuff is going in is vital. Here, we’re going to highlight our five favourite foods that are great for your mouth!
All the cheese fiends and yoghurt lovers out there will be glad to hear that their favourite snacks are great for your teeth. They both contain good amounts of calcium and protein, which are great for protecting your enamel. Separately, cheese re-balances your pH levels – lowering the risk of tooth decay, and yoghurt contains good bacteria that help to fight the bad bacteria in your mouth.
- Carrot and celery
The next time you’re reaching for a bag of crisps or a biscuit, stop. Carrots and celery are delicious snacks that are fantastic for your teeth. They contain plenty of fibre and have a natural crunch making them act as natural toothbrushes. Carrots also contain vitamin A whilst celery contains vitamins A and C.
- Green leafy vegetables
Leafy greens are often the mainstay of healthy food lists and this is no exception. Leafy greens such as kale and spinach contain large amounts of calcium that help to build teeth enamel. They also contain folic acid (a type of Vitamin B) that can help to protect against mouth and gum disease.
Almonds are great for your teeth – they’re high in calcium and protein, both of which are fantastic for protecting and rebuilding the surface of your teeth. Almonds are also low in sugar but have a sweet taste, which pretty much makes them the ultimate snack. You can try adding some to your salad or curry.
As well as keeping the doctor away, an apple a day can keep the dentist away. Apples are high in two key ingredients: fibre and water. The fibre helps to create the crunch that stimulates the gums and helps to clean the teeth. The water content boosts saliva production, which rinses away bacteria and leftover bits of food.
So, there you have it – five foods that are great for your mouth. The next time you’re reaching for a chocolate bar or a packet of sweets, switch it in for one of our recommendations. It’ll keep your teeth happier.
