Are your gums swollen or infected?
Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth?
Are your teeth loose?
Gum (Periodontal) disease is an infection of the tissues that surrounds and supports your teeth. Many adults in the UK suffer from gum disease in some form. It’s less common in children but a major cause of tooth loss in adults.
A condition called gingivitis (gum inflammation) usually precedes periodontist. This is caused by the plaque that builds up on the teeth and gums. If left untreated, the condition can advance to periodontist, resulting in the damage of the bones, gums, tissue and support.
The number of treatments we offer is dependent on the severity of the gum disease. The main goal is to control and eradicate the infection. We provide a number of non-surgical treatments, such as scale and polishing, root planning and stain removal. In some cases, it’s necessary to remove the tooth. Your dentist will be able to determine which procedure is most suitable for your condition.
Your dentist may advice you to make some lifestyle changes to help decrease the severity or risk of your gum disease. These recommendations may include improving your diet and stopping smoke. Tobacco increases the risk of developing gum disease. Smokers are seven times more likely to get gum disease than non-smokers.
