Pure Smiles is proud to work with Dr Crystal Marruganti, an internationally recognised periodontist, clinical researcher, and educator. Dr Marruganti holds a Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry from the University of Florence and a PhD in Medical Biotechnologies from the University of Siena, completed in collaboration with University College London and the University of Bern. She has undertaken advanced clinical training in Periodontics and holds Habilitation as an Associate Professor in Periodontology from the Italian Ministry of University and Education. She is a registered dentist in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Norway.
Dr Marruganti’s mission is to tackle chronic disease from the dental chair. Her research explores the oral-systemic connection — how periodontal inflammation interacts with conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and chronic inflammatory disorders — and she was the first researcher to reveal the link between psoriasis and gum disease. She has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and has received more than $450,000 in research grants from funders including the Italian Ministry of University and Research, Dentsply Sirona, and Produits Dentaires.
Her work has been recognised with a place on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 list, along with the H.M. Goldman Award, the Robert Frank Award, the Hatton Award (IADR), and the Sir Wilfred Fish Award from the British Society of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry. She lectures internationally on regenerative and aesthetic periodontal care.
Clinically, Dr Marruganti’s expertise covers complex periodontal disease management, regenerative periodontal surgery, aesthetic soft-tissue and grafting procedures, and the management of peri-implant disease. Patients describe her manner as calm, measured, and empathic, and she places clear communication and shared decision-making at the centre of every consultation. To see Dr Marruganti, you will first need a referral from your Pure Smiles dentist.
A periodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional 3+ years of training focused on the gums, supporting bone, and the tissues around your teeth and dental implants. While a general dentist treats overall oral health, a periodontist diagnoses and treats gum disease, places dental implants, performs gum grafts, and manages complex cases involving bone or soft-tissue loss. At PureSmiles, Dr Crystal Mengani is our specialist periodontist, registered with the GDC on the specialist list.
You should consider booking a periodontal consultation if you notice any of the following:
– Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
– Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
– Receding gums or teeth that look longer than they used to
– Loose teeth, or teeth that have shifted position
– Gum tenderness, swelling, or pus around the gum line
– A family history of gum disease or tooth loss
Your general dentist may also refer you if pocket depths around your teeth exceed 4mm or if X-rays show bone loss.
Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved home care. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) cannot be reversed because it involves loss of the bone that supports your teeth — but it can be stabilised and managed so that no further damage occurs. In many cases, lost tissue can also be regenerated using techniques such as guided tissue regeneration or bone grafting.
Dr Mengani provides the full range of periodontal and implant procedures, including:
– Non-surgical periodontal therapy (deep cleaning / root surface debridement)
– Surgical pocket reduction and regenerative procedures
– Gum grafting for receding gums
– Crown lengthening (functional and aesthetic)
– Dental implant placement and management of peri-implantitis
– Treatment of “gummy smile” with crown lengthening or laser recontouring
Most periodontal treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself is comfortable. You may experience some tenderness, mild swelling, or sensitivity for a few days afterwards, which is usually well controlled with over-the-counter painkillers. We also offer sedation options for patients who feel anxious.
Costs vary depending on the complexity of your case. A specialist consultation with Dr Mengani starts from £[X], which includes a full periodontal assessment, X-rays where needed, and a written treatment plan. We’ll always discuss costs upfront before any treatment begins, and 0% finance options are available.
No — you can book directly with us as a self-referring patient. If you’ve been referred by your own dentist, please bring any X-rays or notes they’ve shared with you so Dr Mengani can review your case in full.
For most patients, initial non-surgical treatment is completed across 1–2 visits, followed by a re-evaluation 8–12 weeks later. If surgery or regenerative treatment is needed, this is usually staged over several months. Long-term success depends on regular maintenance appointments — typically every 3–4 months — and excellent home care.
Often, yes. If a tooth is loose because of gum disease rather than a fracture, treatment to reduce inflammation, clean the root surfaces, and in some cases regenerate lost bone can stabilise it. Splinting may also be used to support the tooth while it heals. Dr Mengani will give you a clear, honest prognosis at your consultation.
PureSmiles has two convenient London locations — Fulham and [second location]. Both are easily accessible by tube, bus, and car, with parking nearby. You can book a consultation with Dr Mengani at either site.
