5 Food Choices for Healthier Gums!

We all want pearly white teeth and a bright smile, but we often forget about the importance of healthy gums. Many people think as long as they take care of their teeth, they’ll be free from cavities and tooth decay. However, gums are the real heroes of your mouth. They provide a protective seal around the teeth, keeping them nice and secure. Beyond regular brushing, your diet plays a massive part in your gum’s health. Prioritise these five foods in your diet to keep your gums strong and healthy.

Apples

Packed full of nutrients and vitamins, apples have always been a staple of healthy diets. However, apples are also exceptionally good for your teeth and gums. Apples are high in fibre, and their fibrous texture acts as a natural toothbrush. Be careful though, apples pack quite a sugary punch and are high in acid – always drink a glass of water after to wash away any nasties!

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are full of health benefits for your gums and teeth. They are packed with important micronutrients such as zinc, magnesium, potassium and phosphorous. Sesame seeds are great: They are high in calcium and can help re-mineralise your teeth. Walnuts are also fantastic – high in fibre, folic acid, magnesium, niacin, vitamin E and zinc!

Shiitake mushrooms

Behold the shiitake mushroom, one of the most popular mushrooms in the world. This fungus is quite the powerhouse. Research has shown it can lower cholesterol, prevent weight gain, as well as fight against bacteria in the mouth. Bacteria often develops in hard to reach places along the gum line, so shiitake mushrooms can help keep your mouth plaque-free.

Leafy greens

Salad greens pack an all-round healthy punch and they’re also high in fibre meaning they require more chewing. The extra chewing is good for your gums because it produces more saliva, which helps wash away food particles around the gum line. Load up on spinach, kale and salad dishes to reap the benefits.

Onions

While they may leave your breath in a sorry state, onions have fantastic properties that make them an ideal food for healthy gums. Antibacterial compounds are found in onions. They can help keep disease-spreading bacteria from infecting your gums and teeth.

It is crucial you keep your gums in tip-top shape to avoid a build-up of bacteria. Gum disease effects 3 out of every 4 adults over the age of 35 in the UK. It’s not something that only happens to people in their mid-30s though, because teenagers can get gum disease too. You can stop the progression of gum disease by incorporating the above healthy foods in your diet, as well as cutting out poor habits like smoking and visiting your hygienist as often as recommended.
