5 tips for dental health beside brushing!

We all know that brushing our teeth properly is one of the best ways to keep our teeth in tip-top condition. However, you might be surprised to find that there are plenty of easy-to-follow rules which will greatly improve your dental health. Here are our favourite five tips to start you off.

  1. Remember your tongue

Despite it being one of the main parts of your mouth, lots of people forget to clean their tongue. Just like your teeth, plaque builds up on your tongue and can cause oral problems and bad breath. Make sure you give your tongue a gentle brush every time you brush your teeth.

  1. Flossing is vital

This shouldn’t be news to anyone, but flossing is so important to your dental routine that it’s always worth reiterating. As well as removing the little bits of food that are stuck between your teeth, flossing stimulates gums, reduces plaque and lowers the risk of inflammation and disease.

  1. Drink more water

If you’re looking for the easiest way to improve your health, you’ve found it. Drinking water is great for your overall health, including your oral health. It helps to remove any acidic food or drink that you consume throughout the day and helps your mouth to produce saliva which aids the chewing process.

  1. Spit, don’t rinse

This is a common habit that people need to break. We get it – rinsing your mouth out gives you that really clean feeling, but it’s actually not very good for you. The fluoride in your toothpaste helps to strengthen your tooth enamel and help your teeth resist against decay. If you really need to rinse, we recommend a fluoride mouthwash.

  1. Eat crunchy fruit and veg

Eating crunchy fruit and vegetables is (almost) like brushing your teeth without a toothbrush. The healthy fibres that you have to break down with an active chewing action, help to clean the surface of the teeth.

Brushing your teeth is obviously a very important part of keeping your mouth healthy, but it’s not the only way. It’s not enough to brush your teeth properly and be done with it, you need to consider alternative ways to maintain good oral health. Take our five favourite tips as a starting point – you (and your dentist) will be pleasantly surprised with the results!
