6 important things to know before you get braces

If you’re getting braces there’s a good chance you are feeling a bit daunted. Whether braces have been on the cards for a while or not, knowing what to expect can calm those nerves. Here at Pure Smiles Fulham we have extensive knowledge and experience of teeth straightening or orthodontics. Here are a few pointers we thought might help before you get started on your way new smile.

Clean teeth

First of all your teeth and gums need to be healthy enough to get braces. Your dentist may recommend you visit the hygienist for professional teeth cleaning so your teeth will be plaque-free before your brace treatment. If there is any tooth decay or related issues, your dentist will treat it before you get braces. We have highly skilled and gentle hygienists who will offer treatment fresher, healthier teeth.

Different types of braces

It’s important you understand the different types of braces available and how they work on your teeth. Your dentist will help you make the best choice as there are many options for straightening your teeth. Here are the three basic types:

  • Traditional metal braces, made of steel brackets and wires are bonded to the teeth. They are the standard type of brace.
  • Lingual braces are much quicker than traditional orthodontics, but they use the same metal braces. The brackets, however, are installed on the inside of the mouth to keep them hidden.
  • Inman Aligner braces – these braces are removable and fast working taking between 6-16 weeks for treatment to be completed.
  • Invisalign braces are discreet, custom-made aligners that are becoming incredibly popular. They are invisible, removable and typically replaced every 2 weeks.

The procedure can be painful

Be prepared for some pain during the treatment process. While the actual fitting is rarely painful, it takes time for your mouth to get used to the new pressure against your teeth. So you may experience soreness and aches on the inside of your mouth. Any pain usually subsides after a couple of weeks.

Dietary changes

Certain foods will be off the menu when you get braces fitted. Your dentist will advise you to avoid hard foods as well as sticky foods because they can dislodge the braces. As much as we all love our sugary snacks, you’re going to have to stay away from popcorn, hard candy, gum and nuts. But if you choose Invisalign, you do not have to change your diet. You can remove Invisalign retainers when you eat and drink.

Different people see results at different intervals

Most orthodontics treatments take around two years, but it depends on how much work needs to be done to straighten your teeth. Invisalign braces can work their magic in as little as 12 months and many people start seeing a difference within two to

three months. Inman Aligner braces enjoy a treatment time of just 6-16 weeks. Invisalign is generally best suited for patients who have mildly crooked teeth. Those who have more severe problems with their teeth may be recommended traditional braces.
