What to do from home

Make sure that your children are brushing their teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of two minutes, once in the morning and once in the evening. Having a dedicated time to do this creates a routine and will hopefully make this more of a habit for the child.

Figures show that, in the UK, almost 30% of 5-year-olds experience some form of enamel or tooth decay. This doesn’t need to be the case and is easily avoidable.

This is why teaching them the importance of oral care is wise. Without scaring them, informing them why we clean our teeth and the benefits it can bring should make them want to brush regularly for their own sake, not through coercion.

Remember to buy a gentle brush for your child so that they don’t damage their gums during brushing. One with soft bristles will be available from most supermarkets.

Another tip is to keep an eye on what your child is eating and drinking at home. Limit the amount of sugar they are consuming and make sure they eat lots of healthy food that will keep their overall and oral health strong.

How your dentist can help

Regularly visiting the dentist with your child is suggested, around every six months. As your child grows, the position of their teeth can shift; your dentist can advise whether your child will need braces for long-term alterations.

However, in the shorter term, our dental experts will be able to spot signs of possible infection or fillings that are required. No longer are metal fillings the first choice to fill gaps. Composite bonding might be suggested to suit the colour of your child’s teeth and moulded to the right shape.

You might not know the best information for optimal oral care, but your Pure Smiles dentist will. Ask them whatever tips and techniques they feel would be best to keep your children’s mouths healthy.

Regular hygiene visits can keep your child’s teeth clean and sparkly between dentist visits. Our hygienists will also provide guidance on brushing, flossing and interdental cleaning.

If your child holds any nervousness, Pure Smiles hold regular children’s days with an entertainer and fun atmosphere to put your child at ease. You can rest assured that our team are adept at handling worried patients. Our confidence and care will make this an enjoyable visit while getting the necessary work they require.

Children’s dentistry needn’t be a chore. Pack your child’s favourite toy so they can play with that in the waiting room for a more enjoyable experience overall.
