How Regular is Regular? The oral hygiene schedule to stick to this New Year

As the New Year will be swiftly upon us, it’s time to think about all those resolutions you will make as we welcome 2023! If improving the health and appearance of your teeth is a priority next year, then you’ve come to the right place. To help you plan for your new oral hygiene schedule, we explain what your daily routine should look like and how often you should visit the dentist.

What should your daily oral routine look like?

You should brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, ideally once in the morning when you wake up and then again in the evening before going to bed.

Additionally, the NHS recommends that you should floss or use an interdental brush at least once a day to remove food, debris, and plaque that is lodged between your teeth.

On top of this, we would recommend investing in an antibacterial mouthwash that you can use after brushing your teeth.

These three simple steps will help you keep your teeth fresh and clean throughout the year and will reduce your risk of periodontal disease and other oral afflictions.

How often should you see a dentist?

Unless you have any issues with your teeth, visiting the dentist twice a year for a check-up is often enough. During a check-up, our experts will examine the health of your teeth and remove any plaque that has built up since your last visit.

We also provide mouth cancer screening during our dental consultations, as early detection of mouth cancer results in a survival outcome of 90%.

What’s more, during your dental check-up, our dentists examine the health of your gums and identify any early signs of periodontal disease before making recommendations on how you can improve your dental health.

If you experience a toothache or bleeding gums before the time for your check-up comes around, it’s a good idea to make an appointment anyway, as most problems with your teeth and gums will only get worse and more painful over time.

What about a dental hygienist?

In addition to your bi-annual check-ups with a dentist, it’s a good idea to book in to see our dental hygienist at least once or twice a year.

You can schedule these visits between your dental check-ups, and it’s a great way of giving your teeth and gums the extra support they need to thrive.

Our dental hygienists specialise in preventative dental care and provide you with tips to keep your teeth sparkling and squeaky clean. As well as cleaning your teeth, our hygienists offer an air-polishing service, which adds additional shine to your pearly whites throughout the year.

So, to ensure your teeth are as bright and healthy as you would like, be sure to visit a dental hygienist once or twice a year.
