How to Avoid Acid Damage to Your Teeth

Even those on a healthy diet can be prone to acid wear on their teeth. Acid is present in lots of food and drinks, and it can break down the tooth enamel over time, leaving your teeth susceptible to cavities. It’s very important that you protect your teeth from decay. Here’s how to keep your teeth acid-free.

Cut back on fizzy drinks

Many carbonated drinks are high in sugar and corrosive acids like citric and phosphoric, which erode tooth enamel. The acid in these drinks attack the soft layer beneath the animal called the dentin. Never brush your teeth immediately after taking an acidic drink, because you’ll increase the damage by brushing the tooth surfaces. It’s best to wait at least thirty minutes before brushing.

Limit fruit juices

Drinks such as orange juice, lemon and pineapple juice are very acidic, although they contain a great deal of vitamins and other nutrients. While they’re not as harmful for your teeth as fizzy drinks and energy drinks, fruit juices should be followed up with a good rinsing. If you already eat a lot of fruit, then it’s wise to cut back on juice, because it can contribute to tooth decay.

Drink lots of water

Everyone knows water is essential, but it’s also great for fighting against tooth erosion. It does the job of restoring the mouth back to its proper pH balance, as well improving the production of saliva. Water washes away the debris and food particles in your mouth, helping to prevent cavities.

Eat plenty of calcium rich foods

Foods that contain lots of calcium are great for fending off acid attacks on your teeth. This is because calcium naturalises the acid in your mouth, so make sure to stock up on the dairy. You should always include at least one dairy product in your child’s meals, so their enamel is adequately protected. Also, try including some non-dairy calcium-rich foods like kale, almond milk and soy yogurt.
