Vaping: Danger to Your Teeth?

It was only a few years ago that vaping hit its stride and became popular. It’s considered to be a safer and healthier alternative to traditional smoking. It’s a method to combat a smoking addiction, but just how safe is it really for your teeth?

How does vaping differ from smoking?

First and foremost, vaping is unlike a conventional cigarette. Instead of producing smoke, it produces water vapor, and a heating system and reservoir for liquid are the basics of the e-cigarette device. The heating element heats the vape juice, which contains the nicotine. It does not produce second hand smoke and there all kinds of e-cig flavours.

How does vaping effect your oral health?

Make no mistake, vaping is not good for your teeth. The main problem is the nicotine, which can cause a whole host of problems. Nicotine reduces blood flow, restricting the supply of nutrients and oxygen to soft tissues in the mouth, which can cause gums to recede. Over time, the gums can slowly pull away from the root. Also, dry mouth often occurs when you vape, leaving you susceptible to a build-up of bacteria, due to the lack of saliva. On top of that: reduced blood circulation can make it harder for the mouth to fight against bacteria, increasing the risk of decay and infection.

What dental symptoms should vapers look out for?

E-cigarettes have been medically proven to be 95% safer than smoking, so the effects on your oral health may not be as bad as the damage traditional cigarettes can cause. Still, vapers should still be on alert for any dental problems. Some common symptoms of gum disease include recession of the gum, bleeding gums, bad breath, loose and tender teeth. There are risks that come with vaping and the longer you vape, the more likely you will encounter health problems.

If you believe you have any dental health problems, regardless of whether you vape or not, please contact Pure Smiles Fulham.
