Wisdom Teeth 101: A Pure Smiles Guide

If you’re starting to notice inflamed gums or an increase in cavities, it may be time to have your wisdom teeth extracted. Once vital for digesting tougher foods, wisdom teeth are no longer a necessary part of the structure of our mouths. Unfortunately, they still cause a lot of trouble if left untreated. Here’s our 101 guide to all things wisdom teeth.

What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that appear in the back of the mouth, with most people growing one in each corner. When properly aligned, these teeth can be relatively helpful for chewing tougher foods. However, more often than not, wisdom teeth can cause unnecessary disruption in your mouth. Many people struggle with headaches, cavities and cysts due to wisdom teeth and if you’re noticing any of these signs, it’s time to get in touch with a dentist.

When do wisdom teeth come in?

Wisdom teeth start to come through between the ages of 17 and 25, but some adults may see them erupt later in life. These molars are the last stage in the development of your teeth and often come through when the mouth is already too crowded. The inevitable misalignment that occurs with this overcrowding can cause some serious discomfort, especially for younger people. Always make sure to take your children to the dentist if you think their wisdom teeth may be causing issues.

Does everyone get wisdom teeth?

No - not everyone gets wisdom teeth, but studies show that most people see at least one tooth emerge. In fact, almost 25% of the human population is born with no more than three wisdom teeth. There’s no need to worry if none of your wisdom teeth have pushed through though - 35% of people will never have see their wisdom teeth emerge.

Do wisdom teeth have to be removed?

Wisdom teeth can emerge and sit in your mouth comfortably if well aligned. However, there are a few signs to look out for when wisdom teeth start to erupt. Major jaw pain, cysts forming around your teeth and sinus issues are all clear signs that your wisdom teeth aren’t settling right in your mouth. Spotting these signs early can make the process a lot less painful, so make sure to keep an eye out for any discomfort.
